David Hegarty is best known in the Bay Area as the organist of the Castro Theatre for the last 33 years. He also plays regularly at the Stanford Theatre (Palo Alto) and at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. He is a prolific composer/arranger, and, as a concert organist, he specializes in his own transcriptions of film music from Hollywood's Golden Age.

Castro Theatre

David became a staff organist at the Castro Theatre in 1978, after the original Robert Morton organ had been removed and before the current Wurlitzer was installed. A Conn 651 was being used in the 70s until the Taylor family provided the Mighty Wurlitzer that we enjoy today. When organist Elbert Lachelle retired in 1984, David assumed the position of senior staff organist.

He plays nightly intermissions, except for his schedule at the Stanford Theatre (generally two nights a week). He is currently assisted by organists Warren Lubich, Harry Garland, and Mark Putterbaugh.
